Eva Amrein-Degen
Born in 1953 in Lucerne, married, two adult children, resident at Kriens. From 1992 onwards first approach to painting (watercolour courses). 1994/95 Education in oil painting at the Gestaltungsschule Farbmühle in Lucerne (Dagmar Stroev, Vera Rothamel). From 1995 regular exhibitions in Lucerne and Kriens. Since 1999 own studio in Lucerne.
Material and technique:
My first paintings were watercolour works, but nowadays I am painting almost exclusively in oil. Apart from canvas, photos and paper I tend to use wooden plates and wooden boxes more and more frequently, because they offer sufficient resistance to the intensive treatment. For my paintings I use tools of very different types such as brush, spatula, scraper, roller, cloth, etc. I often use my fingers or balls of the thumb in order to apply the colour filmily. Colours and colour shades approach, are mixed, interpenetrate, are superimposed. An interplay of applying and removing colours, a constant reaction on previous actions. Whole parts of the painting are wiped away, scraped off, revised. Fragments remain, unite with new things.
Picture language and artistic statement:
The starting point of my painting is a cautious approach to associations. These are impressions and memories from nature, journeys, art, etc. which I use as a guidance during the process of creation. I don't want to illustrate or paint things I see, but I want to try to create new things.
“Art is not [...] an imitation of the real. It is the more real.” (George Steiner)
